DixieChickAversary Part 3: The Never Ending Rock

So, I've posted this before, but sometimes, I thought, why the deuce not, since this day only comes around once a year. Wouldn't you like to know... So, yeah, here we go:

Well, today is my birthday, but it is also something else, something more. It is also the day that I was created anew and bathed in the glow (like the phoenix rising out of the fire) of Dixie Chickdom. It was six years ago today, that my mom gave me the CD FLY as a birthday present. I remember the day well, because, well, I don't know why I remember it so well. But my parents had rented a truck, for some reason that I can't identify, and had driven to the army base to visit my brother. I think it was Fort Jackson, or maybe that one in Fayetteville, I can't remember. So, anyway, they had been gone all morning and I was thinking that I would get or do anything for my birthday, because they wouldn't get back in time. So, when they pull up I'm pretty depressed, but I go out to the truck and my mom starts handing me presents. First, I got a portable cd player, and it was a nice one too, with a car kit and everything. It's the one that was later lost by Ms. Ann Clark at Zeb Vance High school. Side note here, all the years that I went to Vance, and I never knew who he was, then the other day I found out he was the either first, or longest running governor of North Carolina. You learn something new every day, I guess. Anyway, back to the point. So, my mom gives me a couple of CD's and one of them was Fly. I really didn't want it, because I was really into oldies music at the time, and I was at that point, where I was like, 'oh it's country? Then I don't want it!' But my mom had heard 'Goodbye Earl', and she liked it, and she thought I might like it as well. Now that I think about it, if it weren't for my mom, I never would have gotten into the Chicks. But, I took the CD, and it probably took a couple of weeks for me to listen to it. But once I did.... Oh, once I did, I never looked back. The stirring vocals of Natalie Maines, the heart pounding tenacity of Emily Robison, and the down home, terrific fiddling of Martie Maguire (at the time Seidel), it was terrific. I didn't think that I'd ever hear anything half as good, and then I listened to Wide Open Spaces, and they blew me away again. As I've gotten older, so has thier sound, which has always changed, and yet always stayed the same. Through ups and downs, sunshine and rain, I will continue to be a fan, because of what drew me in, a kid whose favorite singer was Bobby Darin. That sound, that talent, and that music. Thank you Chicks, for making this day more than just my birthday, thanks for making it a really great day to remember.
