SCI FI Channel to become Syfy

Okay go here and read this article. Seriously, just go read it, it's like a paragraph. I'm sure you can handle it. I'll wait.

Back already? Or did you never leave? All right, all right, basically the article says that the Scifi Channel, home of Battlestar Galactica, crappy Scifi movies, and wrestling (inexplicably) is changing it's name to SyFy channel. Here's an actual quote from the CEO or something:

"By changing the name to Syfy, which remains phonetically identical, the new brand broadens perceptions and embraces a wider range of current and future imagination-based entertainment beyond just the traditional sci-fi genre, including fantasy, supernatural, paranormal, reality, mystery, action and adventure. It also positions the brand for future growth by creating an ownable trademark that can travel easily with consumers across new media and nonlinear digital platforms, new international channels and extend into new business ventures."

If that made sense to you then you should probably just go ahead and kill yourself because there is no place for you in a civilized society. Meanwhile, the message boards were exploding with comments which mostly ranged from "this is stupid", to "this is frakking stupid". I happen to agree with them, but you never know how much of that is it really being a stupid name, or people not liking change. I mean, I think we can all agree that the name is stupid. I mean, c'mon SyFy? Someone on the message board said that it sounded like a venereal disease and I'm inclined to agree with them. But making comparisons to G4? I mean, can't we just wait and see before we start damning a network to the very pits of hell? I think that people like Bonnie Hammer are execs, but haven't entirely been converted to the dark side. If shows like BSG can exist on that network, then there's hope. So, yeah, the name is stupid, but the network can still be good, for a while anyway. At least as good as a network that had Mystery Science Theater 3000 and gave it up willingly.

Omigod, I was just ranting about this on the Xena forum. WTF?!? I'm familiar with branding and such, and this is a grave mistake. Plus, SyFy is so goram ugly!
